The tube size directly correlates to the volume of air moving in and out of the balloon at any one point. If the tube has a very small diameter the air coming out and in of the lungs would be irregular. This is much like asthma as asthma inflames the trachea which narrows it. This means the trachea, like our straw is smaller and therefore breathing would be irregular and forced. This presents as wheezing in asthma sufferers
You can improve on our model by using more advanced equipment. Bell jars have been used to represent the lungs and due to having larger area in the rib cage it is possible to add a second lung using a rubber pipe splitter. This allows for a more realistic interpretation and perhaps reinforces the fact that the ribs purpose is to protect the lungs.
